本課程主要目的建立學生對當前圖書館發展及服務的廣泛了解，透過本課程學生可以學得：
1.了解圖書資訊學的核心責任與價值
2.熟悉各類型圖書館及其特色
3.了解現代圖書館的發展歷史與趨勢
4.了解現代圖書館和圖書資訊服的議題及問題。
5.學習面對現代圖書館和圖書資訊服務的議題及應對之技能。
